Zendesk alternatives: what to use instead of Zendesk, and when to stay

Teams look at Zendesk alternatives for a few reasons: per-agent costs that grow with the team, AI agents billed per resolution on top, or a website chat that has to sell and guide rather than only close tickets. This guide compares the main options, says who each one suits, and says plainly when Zendesk is still the right choice.

We make one of the options, Life Inside, so we have tried to be fair and say where another tool is the better choice. Facts about other vendors were checked on 3 November 2026 and are listed under sources. More comparisons: all alternatives.

Zendesk alternatives at a glance

Intercom

Best for: Support teams that want a full helpdesk with a strong AI agent

Intercom combines a Messenger, inbox, ticketing and help centre with Fin, its AI agent. At the time of writing (November 2026) Fin costs $0.99 per outcome on top of helpdesk seats, and Fin can also run on top of another helpdesk. See our Intercom alternative page.

Freshdesk

Best for: Teams that want a Zendesk-style helpdesk at a lower entry price

Freshworks' Freshdesk is a ticketing helpdesk priced per agent, with a free option for very small teams. Its AI agent, Freddy, comes with a one-off allowance of free sessions on higher plans, and further sessions are sold in packs. It is the closest like-for-like swap.

HubSpot

Best for: Teams that already run marketing and sales on HubSpot

HubSpot's live chat starts free, with HubSpot branding, and conversations land in a shared inbox in the CRM. On Professional and Enterprise, its customer agent costs $0.50 per resolved conversation in HubSpot Credits at the time of writing (November 2026).

Gorgias

Best for: Shopify stores whose support is mostly orders, returns and shipping

Gorgias is a helpdesk built for online stores. Plans are priced by monthly ticket volume rather than per agent, and its AI Agent is billed per fully automated interaction. If your Zendesk tickets are mostly about orders, it is worth a look.

Tidio

Best for: Small businesses that want low-cost live chat with an AI agent

Tidio offers live chat, ticketing and Lyro, an AI agent that answers from your support content. There is a free plan, and Lyro is priced by AI conversations. It suits smaller teams better than large support operations. More in our Tidio alternative guide.

Life Inside

Best for: Teams whose website chat should answer and guide before people buy, apply or book, with real video

Life Inside's AI Chat Agent answers from content you approve in 60+ languages. The visitor chats in text, and when it helps the agent shows a short interactive video of your real people in the same window. AgentLoop pushes leads to HubSpot and Salesforce. It is not a helpdesk: no tickets, no live takeover.

Why teams look for Zendesk competitors

  • Per-agent pricing. Every plan is priced per agent, so the bill grows with the team, and AI agent resolutions above the included allowance are charged on top.
  • More suite than you use. Zendesk covers ticketing, messaging, help centre, voice and workforce tools. Smaller teams sometimes pay for far more than they need.
  • A different job on the website. Zendesk is built to resolve support requests. If your website chat should answer pre-sales questions, guide candidates or book meetings, a support tool may be the wrong shape.
  • Legacy live chat. Zendesk now steers customers from its older live chat (Zendesk Chat) to messaging, so some teams use the move as a moment to compare.

How to choose a Zendesk alternative

Start by separating the jobs Zendesk does for you. Most teams use it for some mix of ticketing, website chat, a help centre and reporting. Which alternative fits depends on which of those you still need.

  • If you need a full helpdesk, compare Intercom and Freshdesk. Both cover tickets, chat and a help centre with an AI agent on top.
  • If you sell on Shopify, Gorgias is built around orders and returns.
  • If your CRM is HubSpot, its service tools keep conversations next to your contacts.
  • If visitors mostly ask the same questions before they buy, apply or book, an AI agent that answers from your own content does most of the work, and you may not need a ticket queue on the website at all.
  • Check data hosting and contracts. If you sell in Europe, ask where data is stored and whether you get a data processing agreement.

Is Life Inside a good Zendesk alternative?

For the support desk itself, no. Life Inside has no ticketing, no shared inbox and no live takeover, so if your team works a queue of support requests every day, keep a helpdesk. Some teams run both: Zendesk for support, Life Inside on the pages where people decide.

Where it fits is the website conversation before a decision. The AI Chat Agent answers from your website, documents and FAQs, only from content you approve, in the language the visitor writes in. When it does not know, it says so, and the gap shows up in AgentLoop with a suggested fix.

What a helpdesk chat cannot do is show your people. The visitor chats in text, and when it helps the agent shows a short video in the same window. In e-commerce that is a product video when a shopper asks how something works. In real estate, after the first questions, the agent shows a video from the agent responsible for the listing and then helps the visitor book a viewing. The conversation carries on in the same chat afterwards. On customer sites, up to 15% of visitors click the widget.

Setup is one JavaScript snippet, most agents go live within a day, and Life Inside builds the knowledge base with you. Data is hosted in the EU, with a data processing agreement, and there is no lock-in, with 3 months' notice. Book a demo to see it answer from your own content.

Moving from Zendesk

  1. List what Zendesk does today: channels, triggers, routing, help centre articles and the reports people rely on.
  2. Export what you need to keep, such as ticket history and help centre content, before your renewal date.
  3. Pull the most common questions from recent conversations. Whatever replaces your website chat must answer them well on day one.
  4. Test the replacement on a few pages while Zendesk still runs elsewhere.
  5. Remove the Zendesk widget snippet from pages where the new tool takes over, and update links to your old help centre.
  6. Update CRM fields and reports that refer to Zendesk as a source.

Frequently asked questions

It depends on the job. For a full helpdesk, look at Intercom or Freshdesk. For a Shopify store, look at Gorgias. For a team on HubSpot, look at HubSpot service tools. For small budgets, look at Tidio. For an AI agent that answers website visitors from your own content and shows real video in the same chat, look at Life Inside.

At the time of writing (November 2026), Zendesk lists Support Team at $19, Suite Team at $55 and Suite Professional at $115 per agent per month, billed annually. Monthly billing costs more. AI agents are billed per automated resolution, with a small allowance included per agent each month.

Zendesk recommends moving from its older live chat to messaging. If you would rather switch, Intercom, Tidio and HubSpot offer live chat with an AI agent, and Life Inside offers an AI chat agent that answers from your approved content and can show video of your people, without a live-chat inbox.

Teams with a busy support queue across email, chat, social and phone, that rely on its routing, help centre and reporting. For them, switching costs a lot of setup for little gain.

Not as a helpdesk. Life Inside has no ticketing, no shared inbox and no live takeover. It can replace the website chat where visitors ask questions before they buy, apply or book, with an AI agent that answers from your approved content in 60+ languages and shows short videos of your people in the same window.

Yes. Some teams keep Zendesk for support and run Life Inside on the pages where people decide, such as product, pricing or career pages. When a question needs a human, the Life Inside agent points the visitor to the right contact.

Yes. AgentLoop pushes leads and conversation data to HubSpot and Salesforce, sends alerts to Slack and events to GA4, and offers webhooks and a REST API for other systems.
