HubSpot chatbot: when HubSpot's own bot is enough, and when to add an AI chat agent
A search for a HubSpot chatbot usually means one of two things. You want a bot on a website built on HubSpot, or you want chat leads to land in HubSpot CRM. This page covers both, and it starts with what HubSpot already gives you, because for many teams that is enough.
If you need more than scripted flows, Life Inside's AI Chat Agent goes onto HubSpot-hosted pages with one snippet, and AgentLoop pushes leads and conversation data into HubSpot. For sites built elsewhere, see all install guides.
What you need
- A website or landing pages hosted on HubSpot. If your site runs elsewhere, use the guide for WordPress, Webflow or another platform.
- Website settings permission in HubSpot. HubSpot requires it for code that applies to every page on a domain.
- Your Life Inside snippet with your own widget ID, sent by Life Inside when your agent is set up.
- For leads in HubSpot CRM: AgentLoop, which is part of the Life Inside AI Agent plan. See the pricing page.
Add the Life Inside snippet to HubSpot
Your snippet, with your own widget ID, comes from Life Inside when your agent is set up. It looks like this:
<script>
(function () {
var s = document.createElement("script");
s.src = "https://widget.lifeinside.io/loader/latest/widget";
s.charset = "UTF-8";
s.async = true;
s.onload = function () {
WidgetWrapper.mount({ id: "YOUR_WIDGET_ID" });
};
document.body.appendChild(s);
})();
</script>- In your HubSpot account, click the settings icon in the top navigation bar.
- In the left sidebar menu, go to Content > Pages.
- Open the Choose a domain to edit its settings dropdown and select the domain of your website.
- In the Site Footer HTML section, click Override default settings.
- Paste the Life Inside snippet into Site Footer HTML.
- Click Save in the bottom left.
What HubSpot's own chat already does
HubSpot gives every account, free included, a rule-based chatbot built in chatflows. It asks visitors a set of questions and sends automated replies to qualify leads, book meetings or create tickets, and your team can take over once the bot has the basics. On free and Starter accounts the bot cannot use if/then branches; those need a Professional or Enterprise subscription.
For AI answers, HubSpot has the customer agent on Professional and Enterprise subscriptions. It answers from content you sync to HubSpot, such as knowledge base articles, runs on HubSpot Credits when deployed to channels, and hands conversations to a human agent when it isn't confident or your escalation rules say so.
When HubSpot's built-in chat is enough
- Your team wants to answer chats live and take over conversations in the HubSpot inbox. Life Inside is not a live chat inbox, so HubSpot fits this better.
- A scripted flow that qualifies visitors and books meetings covers what your visitors ask.
- You are on a Professional or Enterprise plan, your knowledge base already lives in HubSpot, and you want support and handover in one system.
When a HubSpot chatbot alternative makes sense
You can also run both: HubSpot chat on support pages, where your team answers in the inbox, and Life Inside on marketing and careers pages. If that is your question, book a demo and we will map it against your site.
- You want free-text answers drawn from your website, documents and FAQs, in more than 60 languages, without building flows.
- You want to show interactive video of real people in the same chat window, such as a colleague explaining a service, while the visitor keeps chatting.
- You want to know what visitors actually ask: AgentLoop shows topics, sentiment, journeys, drop-offs and knowledge gaps with suggested fixes, with weekly insight digests.
- You also want the agent on sites that are not on HubSpot, such as a careers site. Life Inside works on any site that allows custom JavaScript, with EU-hosted data and a widget that sets no cookies.
Add chatbot to HubSpot website pages
The steps above add the snippet to every HubSpot-hosted page on one domain. Pick your website's domain rather than Default settings for all domains: HubSpot notes that footer HTML set for all domains also appears on quotes, which is not where a chat agent belongs.
To add it to a single page instead, open the page in the editor, go to Settings > Advanced and paste the snippet into Footer HTML under Additional code snippets, then click Publish or Update. HubSpot does not offer the footer field on blog posts or knowledge base articles, so use the domain setting if you want the agent there.
Getting chat leads into HubSpot CRM
Whatever platform your website runs on, AgentLoop pushes leads and conversation data into HubSpot, so sales sees what a visitor asked before the first call. It also scores and routes leads and sends alerts to Slack. See sales and marketing for how teams use it.
Check that it works
- Open a published HubSpot page in a private browser window.
- Look for the Life Inside widget in a bottom corner of the page.
- Ask a question your content answers, then one it should not know. The agent should say so and point to the right contact or booking link.
- Check that the conversation appears in AgentLoop and, once the connection is set up, that the lead appears in HubSpot.
